Concept Design
Good architecture has its origins in thoughtful spatial design. It is the framework of any project and together with the materialization of the surfaces determine the success of a project. This also means that good architecture does not necessarily need to be breaking the bank. Carefully laying out spaces, solving for program adjacencies, analyzing circulation flows and adding intentional architectural features do not necessarily need to increase the budget.
Spatial design goes hand in hand with architectural storytelling. For the Squarespace NYC HQ, while I was with A+I, the enclosed program elements were grouped in the center of the floor, with a singular circulation path around the core. To highlight the direction of traffic, the inner corners were rounded, defining the architectural language for the entire project.
During my tenure at Peloton, we developed warehouse office locations based on the design for the Peloton NYC HQ, but with a limited palette that made room for contractor suggested alternatives. By carefully organizing the program we managed to create an office space that was anything but ordinary, making sure that every Peloton employee would be excited to come into work.
Concept Design is a thrilling phase of any project. It is where the foundation is laid. And this is true for any scale or type of project. I use graphic and visualization tools to convey design ideas and coordinate with consultants, much like a traditional architecture office.
