Architectural Storytelling
Good architecture should speak for itself. Thoughtfully designed space with the right tactile finishes and carefully curated furniture can do without any additional post-rationalizing. That said, during the design process it is essential to create a design narrative that will inform the spatial design, the material choices and the furniture selection. This is a very tough process, because it often involves subjective choices.
Developing diagrams, concept floor plans, mood boards and using reference imagery can help tell the architectural story, the parti. I put a lot of importance on storytelling as not everyone looks at architecture the same way. Some times, when the goal is to innovate or change, it is hard to imagine how design concepts will eventually actualize in real space. Even for architects this is a difficult process with a serious level of uncertainty. Visualizing ideas and developing design storyboards can assist in getting everyone on the team comfortable with the goals for the project.
Below are some visualization techniques developed and presented during my time at A+I.
